Hate Crime Training Event Package
What this Training Resource is:
This training resource is an interactive event training pack which brings to life a mock hate crime trial that highlights the challenges different organisations face when prosecuting a hate crime.
Benefits of this Pack:
This pack aims to improve the understanding, knowledge, and awareness of the roles of the CPS, police forces and third-party reporting services whilst developing skills in recognising, responding, preventing and investigating hate crimes. Particularly, raising awareness of the most underreported strands of hate crime.
Why this Resource Pack was Created:
This pack was created to raise awareness of the different strands of hate crime, how it can be reported and how forces can support victims. To mark National Hate Crime Awareness Week (HCAW) 2023, Hertfordshire County Community Safety Unit (CCSU) worked in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), and True Vision- the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC), to bring this training pack to life. The Hertfordshire CCSU is the joint unit for Hertfordshire County Council and the Hertfordshire police.
Who This Pack is For:
This resource package is predominantly for use in police forces, with partner agencies, and third-party reporting sites, and any further relevant organisations. This resource pack can be amended to suit the students’ needs, and opportunities are made throughout the pack where sections can be tailored accordingly. Suggestions are made throughout, with opportunities to make the training shorter or longer with further research opportunities also available.
How to Use this Training Resource Package:
This training package has been developed to solidify strengths and address weaknesses that you or your students may have in the field of hate crime.
The slide deck pack is split into three sections- Introduction to Hate Crime, Defendant Arrest & Interview: The Role of the Defence Solicitor, and Crown Prosecution Service: Charging Decision. This pack is fully printable or can be used online, both methods of access are compatible with this event training resource.
In Section 3 of the resource pack (supplementary to the slide deck), there are a few examples of proposed timetables as well as workshop structures, with activities and resources suggested throughout. These suggestions can either be used fully, partially, or not at all.
The resource pack is structured so that you may choose the resources that you wish to engage with. These are, Slide Deck Part 1: Introduction to Hate Crime (no workshop associated), Slide Deck Part 2: Defendant Arrest & Interview (Workshop 1: Reporting/ Arrest & Interview), and Slide Deck Part 3: CPS Charging Decision (Workshop 2: Charging Decision, and Workshop 3: Guilty / Not Guilty).
